Spouting is the least glamorous part of a house and the most reliably ignored. It also fails quietly — right up until water is running down the wall, into the fascia, and toward the foundations. Here's what replacement actually costs, and how the pricing is put together.

Repair or replace?
Worth settling first, because it's a big difference in cost. Gutter repair is the right call for isolated problems: one leaking joint, a sagging span, a few failed brackets, a section damaged by a branch.
Replacement is the honest answer when:
- Rust or splits appear in several places rather than one.
- The profile has deformed so the falls no longer run to the outlets.
- Brackets are pulling out along a whole run because the fascia behind them has softened.
- You're repairing the same guttering every year or two.
- The roof is being replaced anyway — replace both while access is already paid for.
How gutter pricing works
Three components, and understanding them makes quotes easy to compare.
1. Guttering, per lineal metre. Supplied and installed, generally $70 – $130 per lineal metre. The bottom of that range is single-storey PVC with easy access; the top is Colorsteel on a two-storey home.
2. Downpipes, each. Typically $180 – $400 per downpipe installed, depending on height, material and whether it connects into stormwater or simply discharges. Adding an outlet where there wasn't one costs more than replacing an existing one.
3. Fascia repairs, if needed. This is the wildcard. If water has been overflowing for years, the timber behind the gutter may be rotten and won't hold new brackets. Allow $60 – $140 per lineal metre for fascia repair or replacement where required.
What that means per house

Those totals assume guttering plus a normal number of downpipes and no significant fascia work. Add fascia replacement along one elevation and the figure moves quickly — which is exactly why quotes vary so much between contractors who have and haven't looked properly.
Material choices
PVC
Light, cost-effective, available in colours that match most rooflines, and easy to replace a single section of if something goes wrong later. The default for most single-storey homes. It's less impact-resistant than steel — a ladder knock or a falling branch can crack it.
Colorsteel and coated steel
Stronger, holds a straighter line over long spans, and looks tidier on a prominent elevation. Costs perhaps 20–35% more than PVC. Near the coast, the specification of the coating matters more than the profile you choose.
Continuous spouting
Rolled on site in one length with no joints along the run, which removes the most common leak point. It costs more and needs the right site access, but on a long straight elevation it's genuinely better.
Profile
Half-round, quad, box and fascia-integrated profiles all carry different volumes and different price points. Bigger isn't automatically better — but on a large roof area, undersized guttering will overflow no matter how well it's installed.
The things that push the price up
- Two storeys. The biggest single factor. Height means edge protection or scaffolding, slower work and two people where one might do.
- Site access. Gutters over a deck, a steep bank, a fence line or a conservatory take longer to reach safely.
- Number of downpipes. Sometimes we recommend more than you had. That's not upselling — it's capacity. A long run feeding one outlet will always overflow in a Northland downpour, and downpipe installation sized to the roof area is what fixes it.
- Stormwater connections. Piping a downpipe into stormwater or a soak pit costs more than discharging at the wall, and is worth every cent — water dumped at the base of a wall is a foundation problem in slow motion.
- Rotten fascia. Discovered, not predicted. Any good quote allows for it.
- Roof edge condition. Occasionally the roofing edge or flashing needs attention before new guttering goes on. Related: flashing repair at the gutter line.
Whangārei and coastal considerations
Two local realities affect what you should specify.
Rainfall intensity. Our rain arrives hard and fast. Guttering sized for average annual rainfall will still overflow in the downpour that actually matters. Capacity and outlet spacing matter more here than in drier regions.
Salt air. On properties around Whangārei Heads, Parua Bay, One Tree Point and Waipu, cut edges and fixings corrode first. Compatible fixings throughout and the right coating grade are the difference between fifteen years and thirty.
Inland, in the older streets of Kensington or Morningside, the more common issue is decades-old guttering on tired fascia, where the fascia work is a genuine part of the budget.
Worth doing at the same time
Access is the fixed cost of any gutter job. Once ladders or scaffolding are up, the marginal cost of related work drops sharply:
- Gutter guard installation — if you're surrounded by trees, fitting guards to brand-new spouting is the cheapest it will ever be, and it largely ends the twice-yearly clean-out.
- Extra or upsized downpipes — cheap now, disruptive later.
- Downpipe repair or replacement — old downpipes on new gutters is a strange place to economise.
- A roof edge and flashing check — five minutes while we're there.
Keeping the new system working
New guttering doesn't need much, but it does need something. Regular spouting cleaning — once or twice a year for most Whangārei homes, more where there are trees close by — is the single highest-value maintenance job on any house. It costs a fraction of a repair and prevents the overflow that rots fascia in the first place.
Comparing quotes
Ask each quote for the lineal metres measured, the product and profile, the number of downpipes included, whether stormwater connections are covered, what happens if fascia is rotten, and whether access equipment is in the price. Once those line up, compare totals. Before that, you're comparing different jobs.
